Jamison continues to experience attacks of mania and partly because of her illness she splits with her husband. and starts working as an assistant professor at UCLA. She gets married to a French artist after completing her Ph.D. She reads about and understands depression more but is not ready to accept that she suffers from it. During her fourth year, she meets a professor who understands her illness and inspires her to take up psychology in graduate school. She starts her undergraduate studies at UCLA where she struggles to deal with her illness and the structure of the university. Jamison has her first attack of manic-depression and she decides to deal with it on her own. Her brother goes off to college, relationships among her family members start to worsen and her father develops an alcohol addiction. The culture is very different from the one she grew up in. Jamison’s life changes drastically after moving to California.

When she reaches high school, her father retires from the Air Force and they move to California. She has her first experience with mental illnesses while working as a candy striper for a hospital at an Air Force base. Jamison’s parents are very encouraging of her interest in medicine. Her father, a colonel in the Air Force, is also manic-depressive but during most of Jamison’s childhood, he experiences ebullient high moods. Jamison is brought up in a military family, living most of her early life around Air Force bases. She then begins to describe her early life. The book begins with the description of an incident that had occurred during the most severe part of Jamison’s illness.
